Looking to rent a car in Madeira with a debit card? No problem! Not all, but some of our partners allow this. In this case the car rental supplier will charge the security deposit directly from the debit card, or in some cases will require it in cash. Some of the car rental options on our website for the island of Madeira don't require a credit card. A standard debit card, such as Maestro or Visa Debit/Electron, is sufficient. If a security deposit is needed, it can be charged to your debit card and later refunded.

Different Pick-up and Drop-off Locations

In Madeira, most of our car rental desks are in Funchal, the capital city. If you're staying elsewhere on the island, we suggest arranging transportation to Funchal for a broader selection of vehicles. Some car rental suppliers might charge a fee for delivering cars outside of the city and airport areas.

• Funchal Airport (FNC): Also known as Cristiano Ronaldo Airport, is the primary location for picking up and returning cars in Madeira and it's about a 20-minute drive from Funchal city center. Madeira is really well connected by air, the airport serves direct flights from various European cities, the east coast of the United States and provides connections to the island of Porto Santo. Our car rental options are available at the airport, with some suppliers having desks inside the terminal, while others will meet you at arrivals.

• Funchal Downtown and Marina: Many of our rental options can be picked up or returned in downtown Funchal directly from the rental office. Remember, we don’t charge one-way fees, so you can, for instance, pick up your car in the city and return it at the airport when you depart.

• Other Locations in Madeira: While Funchal and the airport is the hub for car rentals, we also offer pick-up and return options in other parts of the island, such as Machico, Ribeira Brava, or Porto Moniz. Keep in mind that a fee typically applies for these locations due to their distance from the main rental centers.

Madeira is a very mature market in terms of tourism and car rental and you'll find a diverse selection of vehicles for your needs:

• Small Economy Cars: Ideal for navigating the winding roads of Madeira, these are fuel-efficient and perfect for two. Models include the Volkswagen Up, Toyota Aygo, and similar.
• Economy Cars: A bit larger, with space for five and a more spacious trunk, suitable for small groups. Examples include the Opel Corsa, Seat Ibiza, and others.
• Medium Cars: These offer more comfort for four adults and their luggage, with models like the Opel Astra and Renault Megane.
• 7-Seater and 9-Seater Vans: Great for larger groups or families. Book in advance as these are in high demand, especially with automatic transmission.
• Automatic Cars: Available in all categories above but remember they constitute a smaller portion of our inventory.
• Scooters: While less common in Madeira compared to mainland Europe, we also offer scooter rentals.

Madeira's roads are well-maintained, though some mountain and rural roads can be narrow and winding. The island's varied terrain might require a vehicle with a stronger engine, especially if traveling with a group or up steep inclines.
